Hemmeroids Causes And Prevention Tips: Is Losing Weight An Option?
It may feel a bit off if you go to the doctor for help with your piles (hemmeroids ) and he or she advises you to change your diet, lose weight and exercise more. Believe it ornot, there is a connection here. There are actually many varying hemmeroids causes and prevention measures you can take when it comes to this medical condition.
But almost always, as a preventive measure for more “piles” episodes in the future, the doctor will point to the direction of your weight gain and your need to shed some pounds off. Here’s why.
One of the major causes of hemmeroids is hypertension or high blood pressure that usually sets in when you have packed on the pounds. In this regard, portal hypertension is one of the causes behind the recurrent appearance of piles in your posterior area. Portal hypertension tends to affect the connection between the vena cava veins (which support the systemic circulation of blood) and the portal vein (portal circulation) in the rectal wall.
Such “short-circuiting” of the blood circulation leads to high blood pressure in a particular area. Hemmeroids causes and prevention due to hypertension can be traced to unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle. So yes, weight loss is important in preventing more episodes of piles.
Obesity or simply being overweight by itself can cause hemmeroids. The additional weight in that area tends to increase rectal vein pressure. This, in turn, weakens the muscles of the pelvic floor causing veins to become distended. Frequent bouts of distention often lead to an accumulation of blood or “cushions” of blood which can now be called piles.
Unfortunately, these “cushions” of blood are pushing against the sensitive lining of the rectal walls, further increasing the pressure on the veins. At the same time, the “cushions” are filled with sensitive nerve endings that make piles very painful for the person. Yet again, hemmeroids causes and prevention due to the additional weight in the posterior area can be traced to weight gain and the need to shed pounds.
Poor muscle tone and poor posture during the most active periods of the day also leads to the recurrent appearance of piles. Poor muscle tone already contributes to the unwarranted pressure on the rectal veins; and having poor posture does not help relieve the situation at all. So, as a preventive measure, doctors recommend more exercise to, at least help strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.
Kegel exercises work particularly well as a preventive measure for hemmeroids, and this simply entails tucking in and releasing the interior muscles in the genital area for a few minutes at a time. However, becoming more active in your daily routine not only helps relieve the pressure from your back side, but it also keeps you on your feet.
One known cause of hemmeroids is sitting for very long periods of time. Since the pressure here is almost constant when you do sit in the office for 8 hours at a time, and then at home until bedtime, the veins and the muscles have no way of getting their much needed “relief.”
Walking keeps you on your feet and can even help strengthen the muscles from the pelvic region downwards. Simple exercises to keep you from being sedentary help in the prevention of piles from appearing again. It also contributes to weight loss which is also a great bonus.
